Spiral: From the Book of Saw
Sometimes it gets hard to review a movie like Spiral: From the Book of Saw. It is not a bad movie. On the contrary, Saw fans are going to embrace it with open arms. Having said that, it is not going to be a highly rated movie either.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw – Critics vs Fans
The movie’s rating at Rotten Tomatoes sums it up rather perfectly. Movie critics don’t like it, they can’t appreciate it being “movie critics” and all. But the fan ratings on the same website (RT) tells a different story. Fans being fans, they actually don’t care what critics are pointing out about this movie. For them, it is a fine restart for the Saw franchise.
Well, critics have all sorts of things to say about this movie. They think it is an interesting rewrite of Saw but point out several things that they believe could’ve improved considering the flaws of the previous movies.
Building on what critics are saying, the duo of Samuel L. Jackon and Chris Rock could’ve been utilized a bit more. The potential of both these great actors has not been used to the full.
Overall the movie had all the ingredients to be a better take at the Saw formula. This movie does promise that at the start but once the plot moves forward things get a bit more classic Saw. But fans do believe that the story has enough in it to be a nice restarter to the franchise.
Bottom Line
Chris Rock in particular has done a great job playing a crime detective. His character has enough depth to be the lead. I think many people are not going to be happy about the ending. But expecting something different from a Saw movie is always going to end in disappointment.
After all, fans do love this franchise for being what it is, not for what it should be.
